VOLVO MAINTENANCE

My top selling Volvo has the reliable 2.5 Inline 5 Cylinder turbo engine...I'm going to address a couple common maintenance items with this engine.

First off, the timing belt is due every 120,000 miles.  I always recommend replacing the water pump and tensioner and idler while replacing the belt.  It's not as common for the belt to fail, but around that mileage, the bearings in the idler, tensioner, and water pump are starting to get old and could fail.  Kits are available from Gates belt manufacture on Rockauto.com for around $150.  Replacing all the parts will allow you to have peace of mind for many years to come.  This motor is an interference motor which means that if the belt breaks or one of the components fail, the piston will hit the valves and result in a costly valve job.  On all the Volvo's I sell, I check to ensure timing belts have been replaced if it's close to or over the 120,000 mark.  To have the job completed by the mechanic I use is roughly $350-400.  So don't forget this important item!

Secondly engine oil is an item of significance because of the turbo...Whenever there's a turbo on a car, the engine runs hotter and requires a quality synthetic oil to protect the bearings in the turbo which run at a much higher speed than the engine.  Another way to extend the life of your turbo and engine is to drive it gently and slowly when the motor's cold and let it cool off for a minute before shutting it off after extended freeway driving.  I recommend and use in my personal Volvo and the Volvo's on the lot (if they were due for an oil change) Mobil 1 0w40 European synthetic...It flows more freely at cold temperatures to allow proper and quick lubrication of the turbo bearings.  It also provides great protection for high temperatures. I recommend oil changes every 5,000 miles in the 2.5 engine.  Check oil every couple thousand miles and top off as necessary!

Hello World

Hello World...My name is Jorn...it's like Bjorn but with no "B"...I'm the owner and operator here at Anderson Motors.  I've enjoyed vehicles ever since I was a knee high to a grasshopper.  In fact, it was a common sight to see at the Anderson home the young me with worn knees on my jeans.  I was pushing those Matchbox cars all over the place!  As I grew up, I took an interest in real cars.  I enjoyed whatever I could do to be near them...including detailing my parents minivan's!  I bought my first car at 17 and kept it two weeks.  I bought another.  And another.  I was the only student in college with multiple different cars every year.

After I was done with school, I worked full-time for about four years for another small used car dealer.  I then started off on my own in the spring of 2011.  I've always had a fondness for Volvo's.  I personally owned a couple back in the day and thought they were well built, safe and reliable.  I've since continued in my endeavors to find and sell clean Volvo's and other European vehicles.  That's my specialty!  I've learned ALOT throughout the last few years about the good and the bad when it comes to the European.  I'll be frank...some of the horror stories you hear about them can be true!  I've also found that there are MANY within the Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, and Volkswagen family that are actually quite trouble free.  And that's what I've focused on buying and selling.  In fact, my personal driver is a 2004 Volvo XC70 with over a quarter of a million miles!  My parents, brother, and sister have all bought Volkswagen and Volvo's from me!

I also enjoy finding unique vehicles that are well built for the Northland...Everything from the European's to Chevy, Ford, Toyota and Honda!  I've usually got a good selection of quality domestic and Asian vehicles as well!  If I don't have what you're looking for, you can stop in or call and we can discuss finding what you want.

In the future, I'll hope to continue with some random blogs that might feature what to look for in buying used European vehicles.  I'll likely share some of the experiences I've had along with maintenance tips and whatnot.  That's for checking in and stopping at my website!  Hope to see you in person soon!  Thanks - Jorn Anderson
